Setting up a first hive in Brazil is not the same as setting up a first hive in Europe or North America. The climate is different, the bees are different, and the equipment standards, while largely compatible with international Langstroth dimensions, have local quirks that catch beginners out. This guide covers the practical steps from choosing your equipment to installing your first nucleus colony and getting through the first three months.

Varroa Management in Africanised Colonies: What Works in Brazil

Varroa destructor is present in Brazilian apiaries, but its impact on Africanised colonies is measurably different from its impact on European honey bees. Africanised bees show stronger hygienic behaviour, which means they remove mite-infested pupae from capped cells at a higher rate. This does not make Varroa irrelevant in Brazilian apiaries, but it does mean that the monitoring thresholds and treatment protocols developed for European bees need to be applied with some adjustment.

Rafael Monteiro started keeping bees in 2014 on the roof of a rented house in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, after a decade working in agricultural supply logistics for a cooperative in the Triângulo Mineiro region. The frustration of buying mismatched equipment from disconnected suppliers led him to open Glint Gateway in 2017. He trained formally in apiculture at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) in Jaboticabal, completing a short-course certification in 2016. He is methodical by habit, keeps a paper log of every colony inspection, and reads one beekeeping journal article every Sunday morning with his coffee. He currently maintains four hives in the Jardim Paulista neighbourhood of Ribeirão Preto.
